Welcome to February’s learning series Meeting People Where They’re At!
Each Wednesday, paid subscribers will tackle a component necessary to design a learning experience and benefit from collaboration and feedback with me in the comments.
Most practitioners use Knowledge Based Learning (KBL), as that’s how they learned since grade school. This usually leads to a series of workshops each focused on a big concept and divided into major topics. Big concepts include curriculum design, sprint planning, or TDD. The issue is that 95% of the content won’t stick. Every individual is at a different point on the skill journey, so a small percentage of the content applies to each person.
Instead, we’re going to apply Skill Based Learning (SBL). This is an alternative that organizes the content by skill context, so that each experience directly targets a narrow audience and is nearly 100% applicable to that audience. If you’re familiar with SBL, know that this will be a very quick and precise way to design it.
So join me on a journey of applying Skill Based Learning design that is fast, easy, and effective using the Proficiency Taxonomy!
