People are open to the change. They see this skill as not only beneficial, but most importantly, actionable.
For an instructional designer, team lead, or transformation coach, this is a big moment. Getting people out of Resisting and into Green Block 1 (Inspired) is a milestone worth celebrating.
Onward!
But let’s be clear! This is just the awareness stage. People see the potential, but without a solid plan, it can all fade fast. The idea gets turned into a meme and filed under “A” for Almost.
To keep that from happening, we need to follow up with clear, concrete practices. It's tempting to lean on broad, universal guidelines, but precision matters. Each group interprets universal guidelines differently, resulting in a mess of different behaviors and outcomes.
This month, we're focusing on different types of recipes. Every skill taught within The Green Path is about shifting behavior, and each kind of recipe is designed to support a different type of behavior shift.
The three common recipes we’re going to examine this month are procedural recipes for complex behaviors, micro-behavioral recipes for micro-habits, and cycle recipes to reduce executive function overload.
Procedural Recipes
Use the classic runbook method when the behavior change involves a complex series of tasks. It’s ideal for processes that aren’t frequent but must be executed reliably when needed; especially when there are delays or handoffs that require alignment.
Details on May 14!
Micro-Behavioral Recipes
Use the tiny chunk method (as I practice so frequently with Arlo Belshee) for small, high-frequency behaviors you want to make habitual. This approach helps shift someone’s default response to a new, more effective one.
Details on May 21!
Cycle Recipes
Use the external looping method when the goal is to offload context management and reduce mental overhead. It keeps people focused on the work itself while ensuring steady progress toward their goals.
Details on May 28!
Starting next week, we will examine each type of recipe in more detail. Upgrade to the paid subscription for video content on examples of how each recipe looks in the real world!
